While rumors and screenshots of Windows Mobile 6.1 have been floating around the blogosphere for a while, Microsoft hasn’t confirmed anything until today. At CTIA, they announced the new version of Windows Mobile which is not a new major version (that’ll be Windows Mobile 7), but does bring much needed improvements to the platform. With the new Getting Started Center, setting up e-mail, bluetooth devices, or connecting to a wifi network have all become simple. The new version also allows you to view and respond to missed calls, upcoming appointments and new messages from the home screen. Finally to come as part of the mobile OS and not some 3rd party application, is the new threaded text messaging.
More importantly for those who are all about the web browsing experience, Microsoft also announced some details about its upcoming Internet Explorer Mobile. The new version of IE Mobile is said to bring the full desktop browser experience to your tiny screen. Features include support for (hold your breath), H.264, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight. The browser is set to release on new mobile phones by the end of 2008, while Windows Mobile 6.1 begins rolling out during this quarter of the year.
